2017 – Physics is Beautiful (Harmonograph Kinetic Sculpture)

This interactive kinetic sculpture is a drawing machine based on the concept of a harmonograph.  Harmonographs were first invented in the 1840’s by mathematicians to demonstrate harmonic motion and use pendulums to make beautiful spiral patterns that are mathematically described as Lissajous curves. Accompanying the installation is an educational pamphlet describing the math behind the machine and a series of digital art prints created by running the algorithms demonstrated on the drawing machine in a computer program to create 100% computer generated artwork that has the same visual effect.  Visitors to the exhibit may take home a drawing they create on the drawing machine.
